What is under the paving decides its life

Most external surfaces that crack or settle in the UAE have a base problem, not a tile problem. An insufficiently compacted sub-base settles gradually under load, and the paving follows it — cracking or opening at the joints. Expensive tile on a weak base fails exactly like cheap tile, only at a higher cost.

The base is built in compacted layers at a thickness suited to use — a footpath is not a driveway — with drainage falls calculated before anything is laid.

The daily temperature swing breaks continuous work

An exposed surface here reaches very high temperatures at midday and cools overnight. That daily expansion and contraction creates stress, and a continuous surface without expansion joints will crack — a question of when, not whether.

So large surfaces are divided with expansion joints at calculated spacing, and those joints are treated as part of the design rather than a flaw to be hidden.

Material choice starts from use

• Pool surrounds — high slip resistance and low heat absorption. Porous natural stone or outdoor-rated porcelain. Polished tile is dangerous wet and too hot for bare feet.
• Driveways — interlock or paving at a load-bearing thickness, on a deeper base.
• Paths and seating — wider aesthetic latitude, remembering that lighter surfaces run cooler.
• Coastal areas — avoid ordinary steel fixings. Salt-laden humidity corrodes plain steel quickly, so stainless or resistant alternatives are a necessity, not an upgrade.

Drainage is decided before the base

Always fall away from the building. Standing water is not a cosmetic issue — it seeps under the paving, weakens the base, and carries moisture to the building wall. Linear drains go into the design from the start because they need specific excavation and falls; adding them later means breaking up finished work.

Interlock or paving?

Interlock is separate units that move with the ground and can be repaired in patches — lift the damaged units and reset them. That suits parking, driveways and load-bearing areas. Tile and stone give a smoother surface, better for seating and pool surrounds, but partial repair is harder.
